How Fount Helped Edyn Take The Guesswork Out Of Gardening

Edyn-Fount-Work

Client: Edyn

Edyn provides IoT devices & products that keep you connected to your garden by giving you the tools to make your garden thrive. Now, you’ll always know precisely what’s needed to keep your plants healthy.

The Challenge:

Help a young, fast growing IoT startup increase their development velocity, deliver user-requested features, and establish additional architectural stability.

The Solution

Embed Fount engineers within Edyn’s technical team for several months to deliver various milestones across back-end, mobile, & API development projects.

The Crew:

  • Ryan VanMiddlesworth – Senior Full-Stack Engineer with extensive work on IoT development projects. Strong back-end architecture & implementation skills.
  • Logan Edwards –  Senior Software Engineer with direct IoT experience and a mechanical engineering background.
  • Jordan Cardwell – Senior Full Stack Engineer with a primary focus on modern Javascript technologies.  Extensive experience creating fully customized web applications and their supporting services.

The Background

Edyn, a technology company based in San Francisco, is growing solutions that uncovers key metrics for growers to understand the health of their gardens.

Edyn identified missing tools for all gardeners – a smart device and app. Planted in the soil, the Edyn Garden Sensor continuously monitors environmental conditions in your garden. The mobile app provides a real-time understanding of what’s needed to make a garden thrive.

Before they were a leader in the connected garden space, we met Edyn as a small Internet-of-Things (IoT) startup. After completing the YCombinator Summer ‘14 program and raising additional capital, Edyn leveraged the Fount crew’s IoT experience to expedite the delivery of their products & devices to a passionate customer base.

The Challenge

At the time, Edyn was focused on building native mobile apps and a back end in Node.js (hosted on AWS). Edyn’s engineers were also working on other software projects, which would act as the firmware for their hardware devices. They simply didn’t have the bandwidth to satisfy any additional requirements on their evolving product roadmap.

The Fount engineering team has vast experience in IoT technology that made working with Edyn’s technical team a natural fit.

Edyn asked Fount to embed their engineers within Edyn’s team for several months to complete various development projects, assist with product/project management, and consult on technical architectural decisions.

Fount’s engineers worked regular office hours alongside Edyn’s technical team – focusing primarily on back-end development in Node.js and front-end native iOS/Android development.  The Fount team also provided technical leadership at critical points of the project.

“They did a wonderful job of understanding the problem space and the tradeoffs for different solutions…given the timeline we were on, which was significantly better than the experience we’ve had with overseas developers in the past. I would give them the highest marks for the quality of their work.”  – Edyn CTO

Edyn was able to launch their connected devices & products to happy consumers.
